The An-225 was the largest jet aircraft ever flown. Designed in the 1970’s for transporting the Soviet Union’s “Buran” Space Shuttle, the aircraft first flew on 21 December, 1988. After the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, the aircraft was placed in storage in 1994, where it sat until the need for ultra-high capacity freight became obvious in the early 2000’s. The aircraft visited Australia only once, in May 2016, when it delivered a 117 tonne generator for mining company South32. The intrigue and fascination around this behemoth resulted in enormous traffic delays on the Perth airport inbound freeway, with people abandoning their cars and running for kilometres down the freeway just to view the aircraft land.
