The An-225 was the largest jet aircraft ever flown. Designed in the 1970’s for transporting the Soviet Union’s “Buran” Space Shuttle, the aircraft first flew on 21 December, 1988. After the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, the aircraft was placed in storage in 1994, where it sat until the need for ultra-high capacity freight became obvious in the early 2000’s. The aircraft visited Australia only once, in May 2016, when it delivered a 117 tonne generator for mining company South32.
